Journey of Life Lutheran Church

Journey of Life Lutheran Church offers religiously oriented education and inspiration from Christian perspective. Our theological roots are Lutheran but our viewpoint remains open to truth wherever we find it. Always encouraging. Sometimes challenging. Never boring. (at least, that's our goal!)

You just gotta have faith! Everyone from artists to politicians to spiritual leaders to your grandma says that you need to have faith. Faith is certainly at the center of the Christian life! But what does it mean for the Christian to live a life of faith? Get this wrong and you may end up disappointed with God or not believing in God at all. Which would be a tragedy because... The truth may be that it's your misguided understanding and expectations that are undermining your own life of faith....

In this episode in the life of Jesus, we see two things that we can all emulate for happier, healthier, more peaceful lives. First, Jesus spent time alone with the Father. Not just reading scripture or devotions, but simply being with the Father. Second, Jesus had good boundaries. He knew what he was about. He cared about other people, but he made decisions based on his own calling rather than other other people wanted him to do or thought he should be doing.

It's true. I painted a banana during this sermon. On this last Sunday of the church year, we read the parable of the sheep and the goats. The sheep are the people who have visited the sick, fed the hungry, etc. They go to the "good place." The goats are those that didn't act like the sheep. They go to the "bad place." If this parable makes you take stock of your life, that's a good thing. If this parable leads you to start checking off behavioral boxes on a "how to get...

Jesus told a fascinating parable about 10 bridesmaids waiting for the groom. Five were unprepared for the long wait and ran out of lamp oil. In the end, they didn't get to go to the wedding feast. There is joy in this parable (the Kingdom of God is always compared to parties and treasures!) but there is also a sober warning: windows of opportunity pass. What are you putting off that needs to be dealt with?

Jesus turned water into wine so a wedding feast did not get interrupted. That's a nice thing to do, but there's a whole lot more in this little episode of Jesus life. He reveals himself as master of space and time. He connects himself with the creation of the universe and the deliverance of the Israelites from their bondage in Egypt. More than anything, we see that Jesus came not to bring rules, but to bring joy and freedom.

Who is God? Is God a cosmic killjoy, wagging his finger and chiding you at every moment while shaking his head in wonder and disgust? Psalm 103 tells a different story... a story that, if you will accept it, will change the way you live your entire life. God is forgiver, healer, redeemer, and satisfier. As a father has compassion on his children, so God has compassion on all who turn to him.

The Gospel began to come clear to Martin Luther as he lectured on books like Psalms, Romans, and Galatians. What he read changed his life and, in the process, the course of the world: "But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified...

What we don't know is as important as what we know. We know a little bit about Jesus Christ, but not much in the grand scheme of things. Knowing that we don't know opens us up to deeper worship. You also don't know what the narrative function of the people around you is in the unfolding drama of history. Even more unsettling, you don't even know your own function in the unfolding narrative drama of history. So what do you do since you don't know all this seemingly important stuff? Live each...

On All Saints' Day, we remember that eternal life is a core tenet of the Christian faith. Paul wrote that if Christ has not been raised, our faith is in vain. Our faith asserts that one day all will be made right. We also assert that Jesus is the judge of the world. And, as one who has studied the life of Jesus, I say that is very good news indeed! - Pastor John

We all have old tapes playing in our heads, stories we tell ourselves about ourselves. Sometimes these come from our own experience. Sometimes they are stories other people put on us. God's grace frees us to re-evaluate the stories we tell ourselves about ourselves, especially freeing us from the idea that we have to somehow become worthy to be loved by God. We just are. It's grace. And it is been shown in Jesus Christ.

Science has shown us that our intuition about reality isn't very reliable. Subatomic particles pop in and out of existence. Time and space are stretchy. Even something as common as a microwave oven is counter-intuitive. How can you make food hot without using heat? The resurrection of Jesus is counter-intuitive. We don't expect people to be alive again after they have died. But, in our age, it really shouldn't surprise us that our intuition about reality isn't very reliable. The question we are...

Martin Luther grew up with a stern father. As we all do to some degree, Martin transferred his image of his father to his image of God. Martin Luther became a monk to fulfill a vow he made when he thought his life was in danger during a storm. As he studied the Bible, Luther began to see that God, as revealed in Jesus Christ, is very different than his father. He discovered that we are right with God simply by trusting in his grace and love. What good news that is!

In this reading, we encounter Paul asking King Agrippa directly, "You do believe the scriptures, don't you?" That question could have made Agrippa uncomfortable. Nobody enjoys being uncomfortable, but times of discomfort are the very times that lead to our growth. So, if we avoid discomfort we avoid growth and, therefore, never grow up. Listen to Pastor John talk about getting comfortable with discomfort.

In this lesson, we read through and study the words of Jesus to the church at Smyrna, recorded in Revelation 2:8-11. This church is one of two that receive no corrective words from Jesus. Be sure to do the previous lessons first. Unlike some other books of the Bible, you really can't skip around Revelation (at least, the first time you go through it). Each lesson builds on what was learned in previous lessons.

"Game-changers" change the way things are, from sports stars to scientists, some people really do change the course of history. Jesus of Nazareth, whose birth we celebrate every Christmas, is the ultimate game-changer. He literally changed the course of history and changes the course of eternity.

As we continue our series on Ordinary Time, we contemplate the rhythms of our lives. Pastor John explores some ancient Hebrew rhythms from the Old Testament, then takes us deep down to help each of us explore what the basic rhythm of our life is. He concludes by offering three habits to help us move the basic drumbeat of our lives from fear to faith, hope and love.

A mission is the "specific task with which a person or a group is charged." (Webster) Your mission in life has three parts: the corporate mission of the church to make disciples of Jesus, your internal mission of spiritual growth, and your external mission of serving others. Hear more about your 3 missions in this sermon from Pastor John Rallison

In this sermon on Acts 4:1-31, we encounter Peter & John filled with the Holy Spirit as they talk to the Jewish leaders who are interrogating them (the same leaders, by the way, that orchestrated Jesus' crucifixion). Pastor John talks about how the Holy Spirit lives in us. The power of the Holy Spirit is there to fill us at need, but we don't need to be afraid of the Holy Spirit overpowering us or making us do something crazy.

"[Jesus] was taken up before their very eyes, and a cloud hid him from their sight." We say that Jesus rose up into heaven. But why do we say that? It's a convention of speech from an old worldview. We've been up above the clouds. We know heaven isn't there. So what was Jesus doing? He was serving his disciples by giving them a visual demonstration to help them understand that he really was leaving his church in their hands (with the coming Holy Spirit, of course). We can learn a...

We, humans, love our rules. We like to measure and compare. After the 10 Commandments came over 600 other rules. Then came rules about the rules, called the Mishnah. Then came rulings about the rules about the rules, call the Gemarah.  Jesus only used the word "command" once: "Love one another." We want to tighten things down. Jesus wants to open things up. We want rules for climbing, comparing, and controlling. Jesus directs us toward living beyond rules... beyond what do...

Transcript: I wrote something I didn’t intend to write. It felt important to me. I post this in the interest of “putting it out there.” Here’s what happened: On most days, I free write for 20 minutes as part of my morning routine. It’s an adaptation of “morning pages” from Julia Cameron’s most excellent book, “The Artist’s Way.” While I try to be free and relaxed, I noticed that for several days running, most of my free writing has not been very playful. Literally, I have...

In this episode, Jesus comes home to Nazareth and teaches in the synagogue. At first things go well with people marvelling at his gracious words. But by the end of his teaching, people want to kill Jesus because he points out that God loves widows in Sidon and generals from Syria (both outside of Israel) just as much as he loves the Israelites... and he always has. Pastor John teaches us with a clip from Disney's Ratatouille that we need to stop judging insiders or outsiders and love everyone.

The Israelites were at the foot of the mountain waiting for their leader, Moses, to come down from his meeting with God. But they started to get impatient. So they made themselves some new gods... the infamous golden calf. This cost them 40 years. Don't let your impatience get the better of you. Learn how to deal with impatience and even use it as an opportunity for self-discovery in this sermon with pastor John Rallison.

Jesus told a parable comparing how people who receive the Word of the Kingdom of God to four different types of soil. In this sermon, Pastor John talks through the hard packed path where the seeds don't penetrate. Instead, they get eaten by birds. How do we live so that our minds and spirits do not become like hard-packed soil, unable to receive new words of growth and love in the Kingdom of God? Pastor John offers some attitudes to cultivate and practical suggestions for not ending up with a...
